Sarajevo Travel Guide

Introduction

Sarajevo, capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the “Jerusalem of Europe,”is a city of mosques and cathedrals and a checkered past. In 1914, it was the flashpoint for World War I, where the Archduke of Austria was assassinated; in 1984, it was the locale of the XIV Olympic Winter Games; and between 1992 and 1996, during the Bosnian War, it was practically a heap of rubble, having endured the longest siege of any city in the history of modern warfare. But all said and done, it’s really a lovely city, nestled on the banks of the Miljacka River in the Sarajevo Valley and surrounded by the Dinaric Alps.
