Introduction
Suzhou is the “Venice of the East,” famous for its canals lined with beautiful waterfront architecture – entire blocks of traditional old housing. It is also known for its silk, classical gardens, and the prettiest women in the land. The city is actually ensconsed in an outer shell of mostly industrial suburbs, which are often a deterrent to visitation, but be assured that the city center is a pleasant discovery, where you can take a cruise down the city's lovely canals, gaze upon meticulously designed and landscaped Chinese gardens, together with the picturesque pagodas, temples and stone bridges and arches, meander along the city’s atmospheric streets that can transport you to another time and era, poke around the shops to appreciate the city's fabulous, hand-woven and embroidered silk, and pop into one of the local restaurants to feast on Suzhou's favorite dish – Yangcheng Lake Large Crab, dripping with ginger-and-vinegar-sauce. Indeed, here's a celestial paradise of China, directly below heaven – the other such paradise being Hangzhou – which also happens to be among the wealthiest major cities in China and an enormously popular travel destination, with more than 2,500 years of colorful history under its belt.
Location
Suzhou is located in the Jiangsu province in eastern China, on the shores of Taihu Lake in the Yangtse River Delta. It is approximately 62 miles (100 km) to the west of Shanghai, or 124 miles (200 km) east of Nanjing.
