Carpentras Travel Guide

Introduction

Carpentras is a small, provincial market town, best known for its truffle market, where the prized commodity is traded by rabassiers (truffle producers) in a no-frills setting on Friday mornings during the winter months, usually late-November to March. During summer, the Friday market is centered around cherries – another principal product of the region – and other summer fruit grown in the area. And then there are the candies for which the town is famous as well, in particular the boiled hard candies called berlingots, locally invented in 1844, made from syrup left over from the conservation of fruits and distinguished by their thin white stripes. Apart from its edible delights, however, Carpentras has several superb examples of 18th-century Italianate Baroque architecture that are worth seeing, and a fair selection of shops and reasonably priced restaurants. Additionally, Carpentras offers good access to Mont Ventoux and Les Dentelles de Montmirail and thus makes an ideal base for hikers and cyclists exploring the area. The town, by the way, dates from ancient times, originally the domain of the Celtic-Ligurian tribes and later on a Roman colony under Julius Caesar, followed by centuries of papal statehood. In fact, it wasn't until after the French Revolution that Carpentras finally became part of France.

Location

Carpentras, the capital of the Comtat Venaissin area, is situated on the banks of the Auzon River in the plains below Mont Ventoux in southern France.
