Oviedo
Oviedo, the capital of Asturias, is best known for its Pre-Romanesque architecture – a style unique to Asturias, particularly Oviedo, characterized by triple-arched windows, semicircular apses and floral or Corinthian decorative motifs – which was all the rage between 711 and 910 AD in the Kingdom of Asturias. Good examples of Asturian Pre-Romanesque structures in the vicinity of Oviedo are the Iglesia de San Julian de los Prados, the largest of them all, and Iglesias de Santa Maria de Bendones, Iglesias de San Pedro de Nora and San Miguel de Lillo, all located just outside the city. Oviedo also has an interesting old quarter, filled with ancient churches and historic buildings, and a 16th-century university that has done much to influence the city's liberal leanings. The city has its fair share of museums and theaters, together with monuments and statues, including a well-recognized one dedicated to "The Traveller."
Oviedo is situated in northern Spain, 78 miles (125 km) north of León and 124 miles (198 km) west of Santander, making it an ideal base from which to explore other cities in Asturias as well as Costa Verde, the "Green Coast" of Spain," which fans out to the northeast toward Llanes, offering up stunning coastal scenery with beaches and mountains. The city has a resident population of about 225,000, which makes it the largest in the region of Asturias.
