Riga Travel Guide
Introduction
Riga, the capital of Latvia, is a major seaport on the Baltic Sea and the largest and most prosperous of the Baltic cities. And like its most famous concoction, the Riga Black Balsam Liqueur – which is blended from 24 assorted ingredients and fires up the palate with complex flavors and myriad sensations – Riga, too, is a heady mix, in equal parts, of Latvians and Russians, with fair-sized pockets of Ukrainians, Belarusians and Poles, and a bold fusion of old and new, where Art Nouveau and 19th-century wooden architecture is juxtaposed with glittering glass hotels and sleek, modern business centers. It has an atmospheric old town with winding, cobbled streets that is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, capped with fairy-tale turrets and spires and peppered with monuments and architectural gems; and, too, a robust cultural scene with endless theater offerings, world-class museums, upscale restaurants, a pervasive café culture, and a surprisingly vibrant nightlife that continues to draw young crowds from other European cities. Ultimately, one might add, Riga is a city brimming with optimism, having cast off more than 40 years of Soviet gloom. And in 2014, it will fairly bolster its ebullience as the newly-anointed European City of Culture.
