Tegucigalpa
Tegucigalpa, also known as Tegus, is a bustling and deeply Latin American metropolis and the capital of Honduras. It is situated in a high valley in the central mountain range at an elevation of 3,000 feet (915 m), and enjoys a supremely temperate climate, with temperatures hovering around 75°F (24°C) for much of the year. The city itself is a a jumble of Colonial architecture, modern high rises, and shanty towns erected by migrant workers, and is divided from its twin city of Comayagüela by the Choluteca River.
Tegucigalpa's downtown, however, is particularly charming, for it is also the city's historical center, filled with scores of picturesque, Colonial-era buildings that are both landmarks and repositories of the capital's treasures. Among the notable ones are the Manuel Bonilla National Theater, the Church of Our Lady of Los Dolores, the National Art Gallery, Museo del Hombre Hondureño (Museum of the Honduran Man) and Museo Nacional de Honduras (National Museum of Honduras), offering up a feast for the eyes and a rich itinerary for visitors to the capital city.
Tegucigalpa has a population of more than a million, with an ongoing influx of migrants from the surrounding towns and villages. The city's principal airport is the Toncontín International Airport.
