Perpignan Travel Guide

Introduction

Perpignan is the last major stop on the rail route to Spain, and Perpignan's railway station, Gare de Perpignan, is "le Centre du Monde" – "the Center of the World" – at least according to Salvador Dali, the late-great surrealist painter. Dali asserted that the Iberian Peninsula had rotated precisely at the Perpignan Railway Station millions of years earlier, and invoked his thoughts in his 1983 painting, Topological Abduction of Europe – Homage to Rene Thom. He further shared that he got the best ideas for his art while sitting in the waiting room of the train station. In any event, Perpignan is a lively university town, brimming with youthful energy and stocked with trendy, one-off boutiques and hip bars. There's also a significant Algerian presence in Perpignan, with a terrific profusion of North African shops and cafés in the city to attest to it. Still, with its proximity to Spain and its well-entrenched Catalan culture, it's difficult to tell whether Perpignan is more Spanish or French. Ultimately, though, with the city just as close to the coast as to the mountains – think Côte Vermeille (Red Coast) and the Pyrénées – Perpignan is as much a great travel destination as it is a one-of-a-kind experience. Oh, and did we mention the climate in Perpignan? It's absolutely, undeniably gorgeous much of the year!
