Introduction

Pisa is famous the world over for its tilted campanile – the "Leaning Tower of Pisa." But Pisa isn't only about its iconic leaning tower. It is in fact an absolutely fascinating city, rich in culture, with a historical center endowed with an enviable heritage of medieval monuments and artworks, much of it dating from the 10th to 13th centuries when the city was at its zenith under the grand rule of the Pisan Maritime Republic. Indeed, it's a city that is largely admired – for its architecture and monuments and numerous photo ops; its fabulous, mural-adorned churches and palaces and treasure-laden museums where you can see the works of Donatello, Vasari, Ligozzi, Giovanni, Pisano et al, and heaps of antiquities and spoils of centuries-old wars besides; and its 12th-century university, Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna and Scuola Normale Superiore which occupy a coveted spot in Italian academia. Ultimately, here's the city of the lungarni – the “sides of the River Arno” – whose fortunes and development have foreshadowed the rise and fall of the winding river itself.

Pisa is situated in the region of Tuscany in central Italy, on the right bank of the Arno River as it enters the Tyrrhenian Sea.
