Linderhof
Linderhof, all but a stone's throw from the village of Ettal, is centered around Schloss Linderhof, or Linderhof Palace. Schloss Linderhof is actually the smallest of Mad King Ludwig's palaces, and the only one to have been completed. It is also the least pretentious of the lot, even though it is over-decorated inside and displays a variety of conflicting architectural styles. A tour of the interior showcases, among other things, a magnificent hall of mirrors that is believed to have been inspired by the one at French King Louis XIV's Palace of Versailles, a decadent bedroom, and a table that apparently could be hoisted from the floor below to Ludwig's private quarters upstairs. Linderhof Park, the grounds upon which the palace sits, is an attraction in its own right, beautifully landscaped in the tradition of a typical English garden, but in an enchanting Alpine setting. There is an ornate fountain in the park, with a gilded statue of Neptune, that spouts plumes of water some 100 feet high, as well as a Moroccan house, a Moorish pavilion, a Hundingshütte pavilion (The Valkyries), the Gurnemanzklause hermitage (Parzifal), a grotto of Venus (Tannhäuser), and several structures reminiscent of Wagnerian operas.
Linderhof is situated in the Graswang Valley, just 6 miles (10 km) west of the village of Ettal, reached on the B23 motorway, which runs from the Austrian side of the border to Füssen, Germany. For visitors, there is a hotel with a restaurant, Schlosshotel Linderhof, located adjacent to the palace.
