Córdoba Travel Guide

Introduction

Córdoba is an ancient city on the river Guadalquivir, dating from 169 BC. It was the domain, in turns, of Romans, Visigoths, Jews, Moors and, finally, Christians. During the 10th and early 11th centuries, it was among the most populous cities in the world – with three times as many people as it has today – and a center of intellectualism, home to poets, musicians, writers, philosophers, doctors, and other great minds, filled with mosques, synagogues, publishing houses and some of the richest libraries in the world. One of the great splendors of the day, La Mezquita, now part-mosque, part-cathedral, still stands as one of the largest houses of worship in the Islamic world, and is testimony to the city's former glory. It is also the principal attraction here, and the main reason to visit Córdoba.

Location

Córdoba is located in Andalucía, the southernmost province of Spain.

How to Get There

Sightseeing

Córdoba's principal draw, apart from La Mezquita, is its Old Town, the second largest Old Town in Europe, which has a fair few churches and other historic buildings, scores of Roman remains, a picturesque old Roman bridge, ancient city gates, the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos which was the seat of the Inquisition, centuries-old public squares, and even a surviving Sephardic synagogue in the city's old Jewish quarter. There is no dearth of gardens with fountains and manicured parks, along with public sculptures and memorials, sprinkled throughout the city.
