North Jutland
North Jutland is Denmark's largest county, encompassing virtually the entire northern quarter of Jutland, which is to say approximately 15% of the total area of Denmark. It sweeps across from Mariagerfjord in the south to Grenen at the northernmost point in Denmark, taking in Limfjord which runs the length of the county, between the east coast and the west coast, separating mainland Jutland from its northern section – which, in turn, although an island, is regarded as part of the Jutland Peninsula and, in the absence of an official name, is usually just called "northern Jutland."
North Jutland's principal areas of interest are of course Limfjord, which has at the center of it Aalborg, the capital and largest city in the county; and the bottle-neck-shaped tract of land in the north referred to as "the land of light," made up mainly of the Skagen Peninsula and anchored by the town of Skagen, where an artists' colony took root in the late 19th century, led by Peder Severin Krøyer and dubbed the "Skagen Painters."
North Jutland Basics
Location
North Jutland lies to the northwest of Copenhagen, or north of Aarhus. Aalborg, the principal city here, is located 63 miles (102 km) north of Aarhus, while Skagen is 66 miles (106 km) to the north of Aalborg. The other city here, Fredrikshavn, which has ferry connections to Gothenburg, Sweden, to the east, is 35 miles (56 km) to the northeast of Aalborg.
