Jaipur Travel Guide

Introduction

Jaipur, capital of the Indian state of Rajasthan, is where gaudiness triumphs. It's a regal city with a princely air, and singularly the most colorful of all the capital cities in India. There are majestic palaces here, known as mahals – the likes of Hawa Mahal (Palace of Winds) and Sheesh Mahal (Palace of Mirrors) – and other ancient pink-brick and pink-stucco buildings that have given the city its nickname, "Pink City." There are old forts in and around the city that breathe history, and resplendent gardens overflowing with marigolds and rose bushes. There are shops and bazaars selling intricate embroidery, printed and tie-dyed fabrics, silk saris hemmed with gold trim, handcrafted ornate jewelry, carved sandalwood cosmetics boxes, and myriad other knickknacks to surprise and delight. There are also all the trappings of a typical run-of-the-mill Indian city – chaat stands, teahouses, cinemas, roadside dhabas, sporadic squalor, fruit and produce vendors, scooter and cycle rickshaws, and the cacophony of car horns and Bollywood musicals. Ultimately, though, Jaipur is as festive a city as any you're likely to find in India, where the passing of the era of maharajas has hardly dampened its spirit or appeal.
