Padua Travel Guide

Introduction

Padua, Padova in Italian, is one of Italy's golden cities of art. It has palaces and basilicas adorned with allegorical frescoes and other impressive works by great medieval and Renaissance artists – the likes of Giotto, Donatello and Titian among them – and an elliptical square, one of the largest in Europe, with a garden lined with 78 marble statues of well-known citizens of yore. It is a picturesque city, to be sure, set on the banks of the rivers Bacchiglione and Brenta, with bridges crisscrossing the Bacchiglione, and, too, one of the oldest in northern Italy, dating from 1183 BC, with an intricate web of arcaded streets opening onto ancient piazze (public squares). It remains today a spirited cultural center with museums and architectural relics and an 800-year-old university where Galileo Galilei once taught, brimming with students, intellectuals, artists and travelers. It is also, just as famously, the locale of Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew. Padua's patron saint, by the way, is Saint Anthony, associated with the city for his 13th-century works, with a basilica erected in his honor. Saint Anthony's feast is on the 13th of June.

Location

Padua is situated in the Venetian Plain in the Veneto, in the province Padua in northern Italy. It stands on the banks of the River Bacchiglione, with the river Brenta skirting its northern periphery, and with the Euganaean Hills to its southwest. It is 18 miles (29 km) southeast of Vicenza, or 25 miles (40 km) west of Venice.
