Cahors Travel Guide

Introduction

Cahors is a lovely little medieval city, nestled in the heart of the Cahors wine country, where the centuries-old "black wine" reigns supreme. There are more than 10,000 acres of vineyards surrounding the city, planted mainly to the Malbec grape, the dominant varietal here – alternatively known as "Cot," "Cot Noir" and "Auxerrois" – which is usually blended, up to 30%, with Merlot or Tannat, and typically produces a tannic wine, similar in style to the robust versions of the Bordeaux red wines. Cahors, in any case, is tucked into an udder-shaped bend in the Lot River, and almost completely surrounded by water. Fittingly, its most salient landmark is the fortified, 14th-century Valentré Bridge, along with the adjacent ramparts. Cahors, by the way, was founded in Celtic times, predating the Roman era, and its viticulture subsequently developed during the Middle Ages, long before the wine region of Bordeaux.
