Introduction
Philadelphia looms large in American history as the city where the Declaration of Independence was signed – on July 4, 1776. Independence Hall, where the document was actually signed, still stands in all its Georgian elegance, and the Liberty Bell, with its large, distinctive crack, despite claims that it did not toll on that momentous day, remains the most recognizable symbol of American Independence and among the most famous bells in the world. There are Revolutionary War era buildings here by the score, and tons of monuments and outdoor statues, including a 20-foot-tall marble likeness of a seated Benjamin Frankjlin – yep, the one you see on those 100-dollar bills – and a life-sized bronze of "Rocky" outside the art museum There's more public art here than in any other city in America, together with manicured public parks with age-old shade trees and a downtown with pubs where you can kick back at a mahogany bar and tuck into a loaded hoagie or get a lick of a uniquely Philadelphian "cheesesteak" while watching a Phillies game on a giant screen. Ultimately, here is "The City of Brotherly Love," where a decades-long inner-city gentrification doggedly resurrects a monumental city on the American landscape.
