Speyer's Dom is the town's principal sight. The domed, four-tower Kaiserdom St Maria and St Stephan (Imperial Cathedral of St Mary and St Stephan) is in fact the largest Romanesque building in Germany. Constructed between 1030 and 1061, it withstood most of the trials and tribulations of the centuries, although it did suffer some war damage. Recent restoration work returned it to its original Romanesque condition with an airy, almost bare interior, emphasizing the natural beauty of the architecture. Different color stones break the monotony and wall paintings color the areas above the high Romanesque arches. The large crypt houses the graves of eight German emperors and kings. The octagonal cupola is best viewed from the raised transept. The cathedral is 134 m (440 feet) long in total; the nave 105 m (330 feet) long and 33 m (105 feet) high, with the towers looming up 71 m (230 feet). The basilica was made a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in 1981.
