The Temple Leader trail begins in Vincigliata, a three-mile bike ride from Fiesole (follow Via di Vincigliata), and takes you past four of his villas: the panoramic Casa Careggi; nearby Casa al Vento; Villa la Pergolata (with 16th-century oratory containing a Filippo Lippi fresco and sculptures by Giuliano e Benedetto da Maiano and Mino da Fiesole); and Castello di Vincigliata. The latter is the most famous of the Temple Leader villas, and the one he bought and rebuilt from the ground up in 1855 in the style of the original medieval fortress. Along the way, you’ll not only catch some great views as far as Brunelleschi’s Cupola but you’ll also get to pass the quarry (Cave di Vincigliata) where the stone to construct its top part was sourced.
