Your first port of call, Poggio a Caiano, drew its first breaths as a river port in the 13th century, growing in power with the arrival of Lorenzo Il Magnifico, who commissioned Giuliano da Sangallo to build a rural palace here. The finished product, though only in part created under his direction, Villa Ambra, is arguably the most sumptuous of the Medici villas especially in its Salone di Leone X, which Lorenzo had frescoed by Pontormo and Andrea del Sarto.
