Alberti’s influence is clear in the imposing Piccolomini family residence (note the resemblance to Florence’s Palazzo Rucellai). The building is now a museum, where you can visit the ancient hall of arms, Pius II’s study, bedchambers, as well as the art and sculpture collection he built from the 15th century on. But before you head inside, check out the fabulous panorama from the palazzo loggia. On a clear day, you can see over the Val d’Orcia as far as the wooded slopes of Monte Amiata. The Palazzo is shown above, to the right of the Duomo.
