The museum is in the Palazzo dei Canonici del Duomo (the former seat of the canons of the cathedral) east of the cathedral square. Moved here in 1986, the important collection of 12th- to 14th-century sculpture includes the original works taken from the monumental buildings in the square and include: the busts by Nicola and Giovanni Pisano taken from the Baptistery (Madonna and Child, The Four Evangelists, Moses and David); the bas-reliefs by Giovanni Pisano that once ran around the Duomo; an altarpiece by Tino di Camaino; and the funerary monuments to Archbishop Giovanni Scherlatti by Nino Pisano. Via Santa Maria takes you south from the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo into town. The significant role the street played from medieval Pisa on – an all-important link between the cathedral square and the Arno River – is reflected in the grandeur of its buildings, many of which were modernized under the Medici and Lorraine dynasties. The result is a charming blend of medieval tower-houses and noble Renaissance palazzi.
