Back on Via Santa Maria the road leads you to the banks of the Arno and the Museo Nazionale Palazzo Reale. The palace was constructed between 1583 and 1587 to a design by Buontalenti, and incorporated an earlier 13th-century tower, known as the Torre della Verga d’Oro (it can be seen on Via Santa Maria), which is where Galileo is thought to have shown Grand Duke Francesco I the satellites of Jupiter through his telescope. Transformed into a museum in 1989, the collection includes historical armaments from the Gioco del Ponte (see page 299) and artifacts from the court and traditions of Pisa from the 16th century to the present day.
