Just opposite the entrance to the Duomo, this was one of Europe’s first hospitals, set up by the canons of the Cathedral to offer pilgrims of the Via Francigena hospitality. Its history is portrayed in the frescoes that decorate its Sala del Pellegrinaio (The Pilgrims’ Ward). Realized by Dominico Bartolo, with the collaboration of other painters, including Vecchietta, in 1440, it provides a lively insight into both the history of the hospital and the society of the time. Other rooms of interest include the Sagrestia Vecchia (the Old Sacristy), the Cappella delle Reliquie (with lunette by Domenico Beccafumi), the Cappella della Madonna and the Chiesa della SS. Annunziata. The Marcacci, Novaro and Stretta rooms host the Museo Archeologico (same opening hours), which exhibits Etruscan and Toman remains taken mainly from the Siena and Chiusi areas.
