The pinnacle of Padova’s rich collection of historical and artistic monuments, the Scrovegni Chapel was built by Enrico Scrovegni in 1303 to spare his deceased usurer father from the hell wished upon him by Dante in his Inferno. The chapel, surrounded by the ancient Roman amphitheater, is famed for an impressive cycle of frescoes painted by the great Florentine artist Giotto between 1303 and 1305, narrating scenes from the lives of Mary and Jesus. Among the most important panels in the early Renaissance cycle are the Nativity (left), the Lament Over the Dead Christ (above) and the Last Judgment, in which Enrico is shown offering the chapel to the Madonna.
