One of the best starting points to explore Cittadella’s historic area is at the information center located in the Casa del Capitano (Captain’s House) near the Porta Bassanese. From here, you can walk along the walls, the Camminamento di Ronda, more than half-way around the medieval town until you reach the Torre di Malta. Built in 1251 by the tyrant Ezzelino da Romano, it was used as a prison until he was driven out of the territory and prisoners were set free. Today the tower houses an archaeological museum with artifacts from the city’s early history dating back to the Bronze Age, including tools and ceramics. The walk and tower are open Sat and Sun, 3-7 pm, and weekdays upon request. The self-guided tour of the walls, including a visit to the museum, is Euro 2, but it’s closed on rainy days. Guided tours in English cost Euro 25. Continue on to the center of town and the Duomo, the neoclassical cathedral built in the 18th and 19th centuries dedicated to the Saints Prosdocimo and Donato. The museum and art gallery are open 9:30 am-12 pm and 3:30-6:30 pm daily. Closed Mon afternoons.
