While so many structures throughout Italy have robbed the title agriturismo, sometimes using it to wrongly describe a restored country house that has guest rooms and dining facilities with an unfortunate emphasis on neither one, you can count on a genuine agriturismo experience at Breseghea, where they produce nearly all of the products they serve and sell (80%) on their own land. Positioned just outside of Bassano del Grappa, this classic agriturismo is one of the best known in the zone and a popular gathering spot for locals on weekends. The family works hard all week tending their animals and their land to prepare for the weekend when they open their doors with a friendly smile and a great pride in their family’s traditions. From Friday until Sunday evening Samantha, her mother Rosa and her sisters entertain everyone from famous clothing designers to the local farm folk who gather together around long tables and take part in a truly homegrown experience. The family prepares traditional specialties using fruits and vegetables from their garden, salumi and meats from their animals, and hearty bread from their wood oven, all complemented by homemade wine from their vineyards. Before leaving, you can purchase a number of their products, including their famous pane (bread), sottoaceti (pickled garden vegetables) and their macedonia of dried fruit soaked in grappa. The aint-hearted should remain in the dining room with their small glass of espresso at the end of the meal (coffee here is served up the old-fashioned way in glasses not cups), but the curious should request a tour of the farm. Visit the cellar where they store their wines and aging salumi, their animal pens, vineyards and slaughter rooms.
