Krimml
Krimml is an extraordinarily lovely village and one of nature’s most spectacular works. Visitors reach the tiny hamlet of Krimml through either the Salzach Valley (from Zell am See) or the Zillertal Valley and the Gerlos Pass (from Mayrhofen). The village stacks up a pastoral foothill below the majestic peaks that rise all around. Terrace cafés and cozy stüberl beckon, and in summer flowers spill off balconies blessed with magnificent mountain, valley, and waterfall views. In addition to wintertime skiing, and in spite of direct access into the Höhe Tauern National Park, the primary focus in the village is the spectacular Krimmler Falls. At their finest on July afternoons, the roaring waterfalls dive a total of 380 m through three segments of forest-ensconced chutes. A steep, asphalt trail hairpins alongside, allowing spectators – and there are many of them – refreshingly misty vantage points from which to experience this natural wonder. The trail continues past all three stages of the falls, eventually petering out into a gravel road and then a narrow dirt path.
