A Brief History of Avignon

A Brief History of Avignon

Before the Romans arrived in the first century BC, Avignon was a Celtic-Ligurian river port called Cavares. The Romans named the town Avenio (town of the river), from which Avignon is derived, and stayed about 600 years. Still, it was the Middle Ages, and in particular the 13th and 14th-century era of the French popes and anti-popes, that gave Avignon the character for which it is still renowned.
