Introduction
Cannes is known the world over as the "Capital of Cinema." In fact, if there's just one thing people know about the Riviera, it's likely to be that the Cannes Film Festival is held there. Every year in May, film stars, film producers, film directors, film distributors, film buyers, film investors and publicists, together with throngs of celebrity watchers and autograph seekers, take over the town. The film crowd can be found parading along La Croisette, browsing in the town's famous luxury shops, partying on fancy yachts in the harbor, cutting deals in hotel rooms, restaurants and bars, and of course watching the competition entries at the Festival Hall. The impact of it all is actually felt for miles around during festival season, with nary a hotel room to be found in Cannes or its coastal neighbors within an hour's drive of it. Historically, the first Cannes Film Festival was held in 1946, when such blockbusters of the day as Jean Cocteau’s Beauty and the Beast, Alfred Hitchcock’s Notorious and Rita Hayworth's career-defining film, Gilda, were shown to an enthusiastic audience. Cannes has since grown hugely in stature, hosting any number of festivals and trade shows to dwarf all other towns and cities in France, other than Paris, emerging as the biggest trade show center in the nation.
