From the Rathaus, Hussenstraße leads to the 14th-century Schnetztor, one of only three remaining medieval city gates. Shortly before the gate is the Hus Museum, dedicated to the memory of the Prague church reformer Jan Hus. It was long thought that he actually lived here during his visit to the Council of Constance. (He actually stayed at Number 22 in the house Zur Roten Kanne.) Hus, who among other things questioned the authority of the Pope, was invited to explain himself at the Council of Constance. Emperor Sigismund assured him safe passage, but rescinded that in an effort to win favor with the church. In 1415, Hus was declared a heretic and burned at the stake outside the city gates.
