The main sight in the area is the huge Weingarten St Martin Basilica. It was constructed in 1715-24 as the largest Baroque church in Germany. The cupola was inspired by St Peter’s in Rome and its façade by the Kollegienkirche in Salzburg. Its bright-colored stuccos were done by C D Asam and are complemented by other equally masterful stuccos and gilded works. The organ has 6,666 pipes and is popular for organ concerts. The church is part of a monastery complex founded by the Guelph (Welf) family in 940 and contains the graves of several members of this once-powerful family. A prize possession is the holy blood relic, claiming to contain blood from the wound in Christ’s side mixed with earth from Golgotha. On the Friday after Asuncion, a religious procession attracting up to 3,000 horsemen takes place. On the night before, up to 10,000 pilgrims participate in a candle-light procession.
