Binz

Binz, a beach resort town situated on the east coast of the island, is the largest and most elegant town on Rügen. Here, cars from all parts of Germany line the streets on sunny weekends and during the summer season. The town has the longest seaside promenade on the island. It also has the largest collection of Bäderarchitektur (resort architecture) buildings that survived from the late 19th century. Often Art Nouveau, these buildings are characterized by corner towers, gables, and balconies.

One of the most popular destinations on the island is the Jagdschloss Granitz (Hunting Castle), a few km south of Binz. It was erected by Prince Malte in 1836 in a Neo-Gothic Tudor style. It is on the highest point in this part of the island – the 107-m (351-foot) Tempelberg, offering grand views of the surroundings. From Binz, it is best approached by walking or public transportation.

Sellin

South of Binz are the resort towns of Sellin, Baabe and Göhren. All are much smaller and less elegant than Binz – they do offer more peace and quiet though. It’s worth stopping in Sellin to see the impressive 400-m (1,280-foot) pier with its two-level restaurant. Here the beach is 70 m (220 feet) lower than the town – an elevator is available.
