Bernkastel-Kues

Bernkastel-Kues is a small town with beautiful half-timbered houses. It is also the largest single wine-growing region in Germany. Some 95% of the grapes are Riesling. Bernkastel is on the right bank. The most picturesque sight is the Marktplatz with the 17th century Michaelsbrunnen (Michael Fountains) and Renaissance Rathaus (Town Hall). The ruins of Burg Landshut tower over the town. This 11th-century castle belonged to the archbishop of Trier, but has been in ruins since the French destroyed it in the 17th century. The views are worth the climb.

On the left bank is Kues. The 15th-century St Nikolaus Hospital is here, with a chapel and cloisters. It also houses the the Weinkulturelles Zentrum (Wine Cultural Center), Cusanusstraße 2, with the Mosel-Weinmuseum (Mosel Wine Museum) and a vinothek in the original vaulted cellars. The vinothek allows visitors to sample some 130 local labels.
