To commemorate the centenary of the allied victory over Napoleon at the Battle of the Nations, the German Empire erected the Völkerschlachtdenkmal. The 91-m (270-foot) colossus of Saxon porphyry took 15 years to build and is still undisputedly the largest monument in Germany. (It is also a strong contender for the titles of ugliest and most overdone!) The monument has a Hall of Honor with 324 equestrian soldiers in the cupola. A further 12 huge soldiers guard the outside of the building together with an enormous archangel Gabriel. Around 500 steps lead to the viewing platform with marvelous views of Leipzig and the surrounding countryside. The hall has fantastic acoustics, making it a popular venue for concerts. The Forum 1813 right next to the monument has exhibitions on the battle, the developments in Europe leading up to the battle, as well as the suffering of soldiers during the period. Around 350 original items relating to the battle are on display and multimedia is used to bring across the horrors of the event. Beyond the reflecting pool is the Napoleonstein (Napoleon Stone), marking the spot where Bonaparte stood during the battle. Reenactments of the battle are staged annually in mid -October.
