Kenai PeninsulaThe Kenai Peninsula is really quite spectacular, situated just to the south of Anchorage. It is rich in scenery, wildlife, and culture, and renowned for its fishing to boot. It also offers some exceptional whitewater rafting, several scenic waterways, and more than 150 miles of canoe trails. And as added bonus, on nearby Exit Glacier there are over 430 miles of trails, crisscrossing between the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, Kenai Fjords National Park, Chugach National Forest and Kachemak State Park.Kenai, Soldotna, Cooper Landing and SeawardOn the Kenai Peninsula are the towns of Kenai, filled with historic sites and home to four caribou herds; Soldotna, noted for its world-record King Salmon, weighing 97.4 pounds, and its elevated 3,700-foot-plus Kenai River boardwalk; Cooper Landing, where the chief draw is its turquoise lakes and rivers; and Seaward, the gateway to the Kenai Fjords National Park, where you can discover a variety of marine wildlife on a sighseeing cruise, and also see calving glaciers.HomerThere’s a scenic drive around the essential peninsula, which affords clear views of four different volcanoes across Cook Inlet, all of them active. Also worth exploring is Homer Spit, which extends from the end of the road some five miles out to sea, offering spectacular panoramas of Kachemak Bay and the surrounding glaciers and mountains. And then there’s Homer, known for its kayaking, bird watching and bear viewing. Homer is also the gateway to Katmai National Park and the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge.
