Skagway, Haines, Glacier Bay
SkagwaySkagway is Alaska’s first incorporated city, which owes its existence to the 1898 Klondike Gold Rush, when more than 20,000 hopeful gold prospectors descended upon the place. The town is historic, to be sure, with most of its downtown vintage buildings still there, colorful as ever, together with its original wooden boardwalks. There is also the historic community of Dyea, located closeby on the 33-mile Chilkoot Trail, and the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park, where you can breathe in more of the Klondike nostalgia. But the highlight of any visit to Skagway has to be a trip on the narrow gauge White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad, dubbed “one of the most scenic railways of the world.” It journeys through scenic mountain country north from Skagway to Carcross and back.HainesHaines’ foremost attraction is Chilkat State Park, where you can camp in plain view of two real-time glaciers. Then there is the nearby Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve, upon which some 3,000 bald eagles converge in fall and winter, to feast on spawning salmon. Other than that, Fort Seaward is close at hand, where you can visit a Native American arts center, housed in a former army hospital. Haines also hosts the Southeast Alaska State Fair in July every year.Glacier BayFor visitors to Juneau, a foray into the nearby Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve is a must. Sixteen glaciers (yes, that’s 16 glaciers!) flow from the surrounding mountains into Glacier Bay. At the entrance to the park is Gustavus, 20 minutes by plane and three hours by boat from Juneau, making it an ideal springboard for exploring Glacier Bay. You can also take day trips, flighseeing trips, sea kayaking expeditions, and even overnight cruises from Juneau to explore the park.
