Tucson Downtown

In and Around TucsonDowntown Tucson is the historic and cultural heart of the city, where you’ll find an eclectic mix of shops, galleries, restaurants, vintage theaters, opera, ballet and concert venues, an arts district, and the Mexican- era Barrio Historico district, with its colorful, flat-roofed historic adobes, mostly dating from the 1800s. Also in Downtown are a couple of historic train depots, the old Pima Courthouse, the 19th century Charles O. Brown House, St Augustine Cathedral, and Hotel Congress, all well worth seeing. For flora and fauna in and around Tucson, visit the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, home to indigenous desert fauna, including bighorn sheep, prairie dogs and mountain lions, all in natural enclosures; nearby Saguaro National Park with its cacti forests; the popular Sabino Canyon, where you can take a fully-narrated, 9-mile round-trip tram ride through beautiful desert country; and the Tucson Botanical Gardens and Tohono Chul Park, which feature garden and cultural exhibits.Among Tucson’s museums, the pick of the bunch is the Arizona State Museum, which has displays of 19th century Native American pottery and textiles. Others include the Tucson Museum of Art, which has a good permanent collection and changing exhibitions; and the Pima Air & Space Museum and Titan Missile Museum, where you can view older aircraft as well as the last of the Titan II missiles still intact.Other places of interest in the Tucson area include the Old Tucson Studios, an Old West theme park and site for scores of movies and TV series, where you can see staged gunfights and stunt shows; and the supremely historic Mission San Xavier del Bac, set against a desert backdrop, built in the 18th century by Jesuit missionaries. The mission is also known as the “White Dove of the Desert,” and is regarded as one of the finest examples of old Spanish architecture in America.Tucson has several good shopping venues as well, notable among them the Old Town Artisans Marketplace, housed in a restored, 1850s adobe structure, where you’ll find a veritable treasure trove of locally produced art and crafts, including Native American jewelry and pottery. The city also boasts some of the best spa resorts in the state, more than 3,000 eateries and restaurants offering a full range of cuisines, and a rich roster for the performing arts.
