Pearl Street MallAt the heart of the city, in Downtown Boulder, is the Pearl Street Mall, a happening, colorful, four-block pedestrian mall, a wee bit reminiscent of the Ramblas in Barcelona, Spain (though considerably more contemporary). It is brick-paved, landscaped with shade trees, seasonal flowers and large, outdoor sculptures, and populated with a happy mix of shoppers, strollers, restaurant and café goers, chess players, street musicians, and people just hanging out. If you simply want to soak up the atmosphere, and eat, drink and shop, this is the place to be.
Museums, Galleries, Art Centers
Downtown Boulder also has a vibrant art scene, with several outstanding galleries, museums and art centers. Notable among them are the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art, where you can see contemporary art from local as well as visiting artists; the Leanin’ Tree Museum of Western Art which houses hundreds of original paintings and sculpture depicting the American West, Native Americans, cowboys, wildlife and landscapes; and the Boulder Dushanbe Teahouse, which features traditional Persian art from the Tajik city of Dushanbe. Among museums, the Boulder History Museum is a good place to start, for it has an extraordinarily comprehensive collection of historic artifacts and exhibits. Another, the Henderson Museum is also well worth a visit. Also in Boulder are Chautauqua Park and the National Center for Atmospheric Research, both with general visitor interest, and the Boulder Public Library which offers year-round multicultural programs, international film screenings, art shows, music festivals and concerts.
