Hardin

Hardin

Hardin is a tidy agricultural town in the southern part of Montana's Custer Country that is the natural gateway to the Crow Indian Reservation, Bighorn Canyon and the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument. A big job for a little town. A brochure states that “celebrations rage here.” The biggest and most highly hyped of these is Little Bighorn Days/Custer’s Last Stand Re-enactment in June. Hardin has ample accommodations for Battlefield visitors.

Hardin also has a couple of interesting museums. The Bighorn County Historical Museum and Visitor Center, at Exit 497 off I-90, features a “village” with several historic structures. A summertime Indian exhibit includes several tipis, one of which belonged to the late Robert S.Yellowtail, Sr., Bureau of Indian Affairs Superintendent at Crow Agency and Crow Tribal Council Chairman. Admission to the museum is free.

The Jailhouse Gallery at 218 Center Ave. is maintained by the Big Horn Arts & Crafts Association. Revolving monthly art exhibits reflect the local heritage. The museum and shop are open on weekdays.

Crow Agency

Crow Agency, 11 miles south of Hardin on I-90, is the real gateway to the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument. The Crow tribal offices are also at Crow Agency. The Reno-Benteen Monument and the Reno Battlefield Museum, open year-round, are at Garryowen, off I-90 six miles south of Crow Agency. Battlefield sites of interest to Little Bighorn buffs link the monument sites and continue south of the Reno-Benteen Monument..
