Forsyth

Forsyth

Forsyth, a typical homestead-cum-cattle town, is the county seat. It lies east of Pompey Pillar along the Yellowstone River, where the river and I-94 converge. To visit Forsyth is to look backward to the 1930s. The Roxy Theatre in town boasts that it has been showing films since 1930. The weathered brick Howdy Hotel looks much as it did in 1905 when it opened to accomodate drummers swinging off trains carrying sample cases.

The Rosebud County Courthouse is Forsyth’s pride. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it boasts a copper dome as well as numerous murals and stained glass windows. Next door is the Rosebud County Pioneer Museum, a repository for “olden days” artifacts and photographs. Open May 15-Sept. 15, 9-7, Mon.-Sat., 1-7 Sundays.
