Königstein

Königstein

Königstein is a pretty town in the foothills of the Feldberg, at 880 m (2,886 feet), the highest settlement in the Taunus. The town is a Luftkurort (a health resort where clean air and a refreshing climate is thought to be beneficial) and a popular residence for the wealthy working in Frankfurt.

Sightseeing in Königstein

The main sight in town is the Burgruine, the ruins of the former fortress that used to guard the trade route from Frankfurt to Cologne between the 12th and 18th centuries. Nowadays, it is famous as the second- largest fortress ruins in Germany. Very steep staircases lead to the viewing platform on the 35-m (195-foot) tower. The view from here is spectacular and includes the Frankfurt skyline, Feldberg, and Burg Kronberg. Apart from the view, it is also a fun place for children, as there is no museum and they can run wild and climb all the remaining staircases.

The Kurpark at the foot of the castle has pleasant walks, including some that are suitable for wheelchair users.

A smaller castle ruin is in the nearby suburb of Falkenstein. The ruins here date from the 12th century and once again offer spectacular views.

The highest and most popular peak in the Taunus is the 880-m (2,886-foot) Großer Feldberg. The top can be reached by car or bus and is a popular hiking and mountain biking destination. A 20-m (66-foot) tower with viewing platform crowned by an eagle at the top is open daily from 9 am until dusk, except closed in November. The tower was destroyed inWorldWar II when a German plane crashed into it in thick fog. On a clear day, the views are awe-inspiring. A large restaurant and several snack bars provide nourishment for the masses. The other buildings are used by radio and telecommunication companies and not open to the public.
