A Brief History of the Taunus
The Taunus has been inhabited since at least Celtic times and the Roman border, the Limes Line, ran through it. In the Middle Ages, about 100 castles existed in the Taunus but few remain and most are in ruins. The Taunus is not particularly suited for agriculture and the region was mostly poor until the 19th century brought wealth in the form of tourism and industry.
