Hauptmarkt
Hauptmarkt sits at the end of Simeonstraße, a major shopping street which can be picked up from near Porta Nigra. A stroll down this street will take you past the Early Gothic Dreikönigenhaus (1230), which is now a café, and so to Hauptmarkt. The cross in the center of Hauptmarkt dates from 958 when the town obtained the right to hold a market. The magnificent gables of buildings facing the market are from all ages. On the corner with Dietrichstraße are two medieval- looking buildings rebuilt in 1970 after being destroyed during World War II. The older building with arcades is the Steipe, a former town hall, and adjacent is the Rotes Haus (Red House) still bearing its 17th-century inscription: “ANTE ROMAM TREVIRIS STETIT ANNIS MILLE TRECENTIS" – "There was life in Trier 1,600 years before Rome even existed.” Also on Hauptmarkt is the early 15th-century St Gangolf church. Its 62-meter (200-foot) tower was once the highest in town but one of the towers of the nearby cathedral was raised one story to regain that status. The Löwen-Apotheke has a Baroque façade but, founded in 1241, it is the oldest pharmacy in Germany.
