Römerbrücke (Roman Bridge)

Römerbrücke (Roman Bridge)

The Römerbrücke (Roman Bridge) is the oldest bridge in Germany (AD 144-152) and, amazingly, five of the seven foundations and pilings are the originals from Roman times. The arches and roadway are 18th century – the Romans used a flat wooden roadbed without arches. The black stones are local basalt and not blackened sandstone like the Porta Nigra. The bridge was due to be demolished at the end of World War II, but General Patton’s troops captured the bridge on March 2, 1945 before the charges were set. The empty charge chambers can still be seen from the upriver side. The bridge is still in use.
